Before the autumn streaming rush, we had a good look round what was playing in the cinemas, specifically on the search for some light-hearted, family-friendly entertainment. It was well worth combining our afternoon stroll with a trip to the cinema, as the latest instalment of Shaun the Sheep treated us to an experience that was both enjoyable and meaningful.
The residents of Mossy Bottom Farm are eagerly preparing for Halloween. Everything is almost ready for the big celebration when the Farmer accidentally destroys the pumpkin patch. Shaun embarks on a risky attempt to put everything right. Following these events, mysterious things begin to happen in the nearby forest.
The Shaun the Sheep films are, in the strictest sense of the word, ‘handcrafted’ works, created using plasticine and silicone figures, as well as backdrops. The visuals are very natural and have a pleasant overall effect. After today’s mass-produced content created by image-generating softwares, it is a real breath of fresh air to see scenes realised with such meticulous care and craftsmanship. As in previous episodes, there is no dubbing, the characters communicate with one another solely through gestures and facial expressions that are rich in emotion yet restrained. The film’s rhythm, its lack of dialogue and its creative, visual humour can have a developmental impact on the thinking and empathy of the youngest viewers, as it encourages them to understand non-verbal expression more deeply rather than overstimulating their senses.
The story is mostly a series of funny misunderstandings, which is actually quite exciting. The Halloween atmosphere works a treat. Adults can enjoy it too, especially if they spot the tastefully inserted references to classic horror films along the way. It’s particularly pleasing that, despite its 80-minute running time, it’s tailored for children. There’s nothing self-indulgent about it, nor are there any unnecessarily drawn-out scenes.
Shaun the Sheep: the Monster of Mossy Bottom is one of the best animated movies of the year. With its unique visual style and clever humor, it makes for a brilliant family film. It represents a more traditional approach which, although on the wane, emphasises the importance of nature as a value. We wholeheartedly recommend it even to those who don’t usually watch animated films but are open to trying something new.
