It’s a great feeling to be a Game of Thrones fan this year. Following the debut of A Knights of the Seven Kingdoms in January, Season 3 of House of the Dragon — which focuses on the throne disputes within House Targaryen—arrived right on schedule. Judging by the premiere and the second episode, the two-year wait was well worth it.
The third season’s storyline so far centers on the clash between the Greens and the Blacks. Both Rhaenyra and Alicent suffer severe personal and political losses and witness the complete breakdown of their families. Control slips so far from their grasp that, surrounded by grief, denial, and anger, they are no longer able to restrain Daemon and Aemond’s actions or their battles, which are claiming more and more victims.
The most significant change compared to the second season is clearly the pacing. We complained about the endless dragging and lack of action in the previous season, but the third season is incredibly action-packed and fast-paced. We get to see the dance of the dragons in a more grandiose and spectacular form than ever before. What’s more, the battles take place on land, water, and in the air, making the scenes truly varied.
But it’s not just the rhythm and visuals that have improved—the acting has also become much more expressive. Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy gave amazing performances in both the first and second episodes. The character of the Rogue Prince really seems to come into his own. At the end of the second season, we felt it would be a joy to see again the kind of moral complexity that made us appreciate the world of ice and fire in the first place. We believe the first two episodes have brought back those feelings.
Fans of the novel Fire and Blood, on which the series is based, may notice several differences in the series’ storytelling. So far, we haven’t found the changes distracting; in fact, in many cases, they add excitement to the story.
Overall, House of the Dragon has taken a very promising direction, and it’s worth revisiting. Fans are surely already aware of its arrival, so we’re directing this recommendation primarily at those who’ve had mostly negative experiences with the series over the years. Give it another chance, because an action-packed, thrilling, and brilliantly performed show awaits you.
